Daring To Do Things DifferentlyBy Karen Vally on 24 Jun 2024![]() "The quickest way to do things differently is to be you by trying without trying. To try without trying, simply relax into your choices, your preferences, your likes and dislikes, your feelings and your thoughts. Zero copying - simply a positive influence; be inspired by others, yet feel inspired in your own unique way." Sounds easy doesn't it? So how do could we reach this point? After all, one of the most prominent features of being human, is the desire to feel accepted. "Unfortunately, FOPO, (fear of other people's opinions,) is part of the human condition...the desire to fit in and the paralyzing fear of being disliked, undermine our ability to pursue the lives we want to create." "Letting other people's opinions of you determine what you will do and say is a very limiting way to live." "After all, why risk making a mistake, ruffling feathers, failing or losing face, (or your job), when sticking with the known and familiar seems so much easier - and far less onerous?" The price one pays for playing it safe, is often a sense of frustration or disillusionment. In fact, it will probably set you up for a life of insecurity. "When all you do is try to fit in, you negate the difference your difference makes and withhold from others the unique value only you can bring." " "Too often we hold back on taking action because we're not 100% sure of the right action...We focus more on what we have to lose than on what we have to gain...choosing to do nothing can exact a far steeper toll on your career, business or life." "Stepping beyond your emotional comfort zone is, in itself, an act of personal daring and courage. It demands that you lay your vulnerability on the line; that you take a risk. It's why so many people don't." What really helps, is getting to know and understand yourself better by growing your self awareness. It's simple. Just spend time daily observing yourself and listening to yourself and paying attention to your thoughts, words and habits. "Most of us go through life with a general sense of who we are and in a lot of circumstances, that's enough. We get by. But if you want to be your best while being less fearful of people's opinions, you need to develop a stronger and deeper sense of who you are." A great way in which to start, says Michael Gervais, one of the world's top high performance psychologists and founder of Finding Mastery, is to develop your own personal philosophy. He says that it could even be a word or a phrase which acts like a compass, guiding our thoughts, decisions and actions." "I've noticed that, beyond a relentless pursuit of being their best, what makes these high performers great is their clear sense of principles that guide them. Because of their clarity, they're more willing to push themselves, learn more, and embrace discomfort. They can shut out the noise and opinions of fans and the media and listen to their own well-calibrated internal compass...living in accordance with your personal philosophy will require more effort and power, but the result, which is to authentically and artistically express who you are, will push you to live and work with more purpose and meaning." "Courage motivates you to reach for more and constantly seek the next best version of yourself and this contributes to happiness and fulfillment." "True courage includes discerning what matters most and where you'll expend your energy. It is choosing your battles and letting go when they are not as critical...It is the ability to pause, consider and act with discretion." "Courage is the fuel for your success as well as your thriving and happiness." It is by trying new things or daring to do things differently, that we can remove obstacles or overcome challenges and in that process, we become braver. "...it is those who are able to rein fear in and take decisive action in its presence, who will find opportunity amidst uncertainty and reap the greatest rewards." "Being willing to learn, unlearn and relearn is crucial to adapting and seizing opportunity in today's accelerated world and continually evolving workplace." "In essence, a happier life involves living by your own rules." To what extent are you daring to do things differently? |
