What Would It Take?By Karen Vally on 26 Sep 2025
In her book, The Top Five Regrets of the Dying, Australian palliative care nurse, Bronnie Ware, mentions the following responses from the patients she interviewed: not having the courage to live a life true to themselves, working so hard, refraining from expressing their feelings, neglecting to contact their friends regularly and not allowing themselves to be happy. In my research on what it takes to become the best version of ourselves, I came across two outstanding presentations. The first, was a TED TALK by Gregory Williams, called, Becoming the Best Version of You, and the second, was a captivating video on YouTube called, Bridge the Gap, 10 Life Principles. The presenter of these 10 Principles describes how, 3 years ago, he was unhappy in his job and leading an unhealthy lifestyle. He found change difficult and struggled to break his bad habits. One day, he asked himself, “If I were an old man looking back on my life, what would I have wished I had done differently?” Suddenly, he realised that there was a disconnect between what he really wanted and the way he was living his life. He mentioned his priorities, the first of which was his relationships, and acknowledged that he hardly ever called his mother because, he didn’t get around to it. He was following in the footsteps of most other people who don’t really know what they want or where they are going. So, he started writing down these 10 Life Principles: 1. Mission and Purpose: become the best version of yourself and help others to do the same. 2. Relationships with family and friends. Cherish them. Devote time to them. 3. Self-Love. Love the person you see in the mirror unconditionally. 4. Live in the Present. Be grateful. Make small decisions by doing the next right thing. 5. Health and Fitness. This is the essence of who we are. Without it, we can do nothing. 6. Character. Practise integrity, personally and professionally. 7. Growth. Have a burning desire to make learning and growing a lifelong pursuit. 8. Finances. Learn more about how the presenter uses this formula (70% – 10% – 10% – 10%) when distributing his financial resources. He encourages us to be deliberate in the way we spend our money. 9. Spirituality. Acknowledge our interconnectedness and apply the Golden Rule. 10. Career. Pursue a career in which your primary objective is to make a difference in the lives of others. Gregory Williams describes how our health, our ongoing education, finding good role models, making an impact in our communities, and in our professions, all contribute towards our attempts to becoming the best version of ourselves. “Wouldn’t it be a shame,” he says, “to go through this life being okay while you have greatness within you?” What if you were to prioritize your personal growth above all else? “Settling for what feels comfortable may be easier, but it holds us back from our full potential.” Chris Estey, Fonder and CEO of Private Label Skincare, Florida.
