Self-Leadership and Maximizing Your Potential

By Karen Vally on 18 Oct 2025

"Your potential to lead others is a direct result of how you lead yourself."

What if we were to pay closer attention to the ways in which we lead ourselves? We're all leaders. I realize the extent to which most people miss this opportunity, whenever I ask a room full of people, "Which of you are leaders?" and only a handful of people respond. How interesting it is, that we interpret this question according to the world's definition of leadership. When I repeat the question, (often adding a hint at the response for which I am hoping), everyone raises their hand.

How could we lead ourselves more effectively? Dr Michael Gevais suggests that we could do so by improving our level of self-awareness, developing our ability to practise mindfulness, sharpening our emotional intelligence, setting personal goals, maintaining our level of motivation, mastering self-discipline, managing our time effectively, committing to lifelong learning, practising self-care and monitoring our progress.

Learning how to lead ourselves is a lifelong endeavour.

What is potential? It is having or showing the capacity to become or develop into something in the future.

How could we maximize our potential? Matt Mayberry mentions three ways in which we could do so. The first is to change our thinking by doing "an audit from the head up," the second is to become obsessed with lifelong learning and the third is to build a winning team around us.

Stijn Hendrikse belives that it's crucial to have someone to love, a purpose to fulfil and a reason to look forward to tomorrow. He suggests creating a balance between "seizing the day" and "planning for tomorrow."

"Contribute more than you take in relationships, treat others as you would like to be treated, embrace risk, say, 'Yes' to opportunities, acknowledge your own successes, accept life's competitiveness, take care of your basic needs and then focus on self-actualization," he says.

"By maximizing every day, being intentional in relationships and embracing both purpose and play, you'll build a life that resonates with meaning."
