Hope and Courage

By Karen Vally on 13 Dec 2025

How ready are you to open the door on 2026? In what way will you close the door on 2025? During the last few weeks, I have become acutely aware of the extent to which these two qualities, hope and courage, can enhance our daily lives.

What is courage? It's an inner strength. It is the by product of the building of resilience, perseverance, tenacity and grit, those qualities that embolden us, when we're faced with challenges. It means choosing to never ever give up. It does not negate fear, nor does it imply that fear doesn't exist, but rather, it is the steadfast determination to forge ahead anyway.

Those who display courage, have cultivated it over a number of years by watching others, through their own personal experiences or perhaps by researching it. To develop it, takes practice. Despite feeling vulnerable, those who are courageous, regularly venture out of their comfort zones, sometimes by taking a small step, and at other times, a giant leap. Those who are filled with courage, are confident, resolute and brave.

"Courage is a pivotal state that changes everything." Robert Evans Wilson says that courage is liberating, empowering and it expands our sense of self.

Courage is a game-changer, he says, and discovering it, makes us feel so alive. "When you step into courage, a shift occurs in your psyche that is life-changing."

When we feel courageous, we worry less about setbacks, pending changes or the opinions of others. When we apply this courage to all areas of our lives, we notice the transformation it brings about, especially when we discard our limiting beliefs.

"Courage expands your consciouness by helping you to remove mental and emotional blocks so that you may deepen your awareness and understanding of your inner self and your spirit. When these blocks are gone, you re-open  your mind to creativity."

"Courage is the antidote to fear."

What is hope? "Hope is an optimistic state of mind based on an expectation of positive outcomes with respect to events and circumstances."

When we are hopeful, we feel certain that things are going to turn out well. We focus on what we can control rather than on what we can't. It is not merely wishful thinking, but a steadfast belief, for instance, that with consistent effort, a willingness to learn and to ask for help, we will achieve our goals and aspirations. This hope is cultivated through flexibility, adaptability and resilience. Hopeful people see opportunities where others see problems. They believe that they can positively influence the quality of their lives and their experiences.

Hopeful people choose to remain optimistic even in the event of disappointment, rejection or failure. "Sources of hope and optimism are happening all around us. People create new works of art, new organizations are formed and scientific and medical breakthroughs are achieved...Entrepreneurs are starting new ventures, other people are changing jobs and others are creating new products and services." By doing so, they're all searching for new ways in which to live, learn and work.

In what way will you use hope and courage to give you the edge in 2026?
