Falling in Love with The ProcessBy Karen Vally on 13 Jan 2026
When 1 January arrives, many people feel prompted to join the trend of setting a goal, an intention or, dare I say it, a "New Year's Resolution." Others already know where they're going, how they're going to get there and what type of person they would like to become in the process. Some people choose to continue doing what they've always done. Part of being human is knowing the "what" but paying insufficient attention to the "how." No wonder so many people abandon their New Year's Resolutions within the first few weeks of the year. The most crucial, often overlooked aspect of being human, is to be certain of what type of person you would like to become as you travel along the road of life. Tony Robbins tells the story of a friend who tried every conceivable diet available, yet she still struggled to lose weight. As soon as she began asking herself a different question, "What would a healthy person choose?" she began to lose weight. By choosing to do something differently, she had discovered a far more effective way in which to lead a healthy lifestyle. She adopted a different system. "You don't need more motivation. You need kinder systems that support the human that you already are...This is not about productivity. This is about living more kindly with yourself." When we shift our focus away from rigid rules, relentless self-discipline and the desire for perfection, towards a few small actions performed consistently in the ordinary moments of life, we suddenly notice how good we feel and how much more aware we become, of what really matters to us. On days when our energy feels depleted and our motivation has waned, a more compassionate system can sustain us. The role of a system is to support us, not to control us. What if you were to try this experiment: What would you like to change? Choose a small action. Attach it to an existing habit. Practice it for 7 days. What have you noticed? What have you learnt? What would the effect have been, had you felt supported? By designing an effective system, we avoid being reliant on our willpower or motivation. Systems facilitate consistency, predictability and optimisation. In short, by implementing an effective system, we are more likely to achieve our goal, especially when we design a system that will work, even on our worst day. "Goals give us direction. They don't guarantee our success." A system provides the structure. It's the engine that sustains us when we don't feel like showing up. "A good system simplifies life." As each action is repeated, we grow in confidence and self-belief. But inner strength is not enough. It's our environment to which we need to pay the greatest attention. We need to make it easy to enter "The Zone." "Your environment is never neutral. It nudges you either towards getting better or getting worse." The truth is, says Jim Rohn, that real success is quite boring. It is based on the compound effect of small actions that are consistently repeated every single day. Therein lies the power of progress. Success is not a giant leap. It's the cumulative effect of thousands of small steps. These small steps may seem trivial, but in fact, each one reinforces a powerful message, "I keep my word. I do what I say I'm going to do." "Eventually, I began to realize that my results had very little to do with the goals I set and nearly everything to do with the systems I followed." James Clear. "Goals are good for setting a direction but systems are best for making progress...Fix the inputs and the outputs will fix themselves." "The purpose of setting goals is to win the game. The purpose of building systems is to continue playing the game...Having a system is what matters. Committing to the process is what makes the difference." "What feels difficult to sustain, not because you lack desire, but because you lack support?"
