Creating SpaceBy Karen Vally on 19 Feb 2026
When did you last create space for enjoyment? What if you were to set yourself free from the trap of being busy? "The secret to being productive," says Gustavo Razzetti, "lies in choosing what to do - and doing it right - instead of doing more and more." When we are busy, we run from task to task, leaving little time to think or to enjoy life. Our minds need space. Silence gives us an opportunity to ask questions and to reflect on what is going on at that particular moment. Doing fewer things correctly and effectively rather than being busy, should earn us acknowledgement, praise and recognition. It's so much more liberating when we focus on doing fewer things better. The great benefit of this change is that it eliminates guilt and stress. "The 'do more and everything' approach to productivity is not working - it's a stressful trap." Focus on what's essential, prioritize quality over quantity and emphasize achievement. "We are an action driven society - we admire busy people even if they don't achieve anything. That they can do more doesn't mean that you have to do everything." "When you remove what's not essential, you are making time to what really matters." Laura Vanderkam, author of several books on time management says, "Busyness for the sake of busyness and without any meaningful output is a common problem for people personally and professionally...We like to fill our lives with lots of those quick hits as opposed to more meaningful things that might take longer." You might like to try this productivity exercise from Gustavo Razzetti: 1. Make a list of your key tasks. 2. Rank them using 1 - 5 : 1 = irrelevant and 5 = most critical. 3. Review your categorization. 4. Create a simple strategy for each one. He encourages us to eliminate unnecessary tasks, delegate the ones that are not critical, simplify the critical ones and then to devote most of our time, energy and attention to the critical tasks. ""When you say yes to everything, you are saying no to what really matters. That is the biggest issue with being busy: we end up doing the wrong things." |
