Being Vigilant, Bringing Out the Best in Yourself and Creating a DifferenceBy Karen Vally on 19 Apr 2026
If we want to become better human beings, it is becoming more apparent than ever, that we need to be more vigilant. By choosing to be more aware of our environment, our thoughts, words and actions, our responses to ourselves and others could be greatly enhanced, if we had a deeper understanding of ourselves. "By exercising self-vigilance, a person can learn to become more aware of the multiple interactions that engage us with the exterior environment, its forces and influences...What this calls for is observation and attention to those times when either action or inaction is required...When a person can observe and feel when correct action or inaction is required, then this triggers the right use of energy...Self-vigilance is more about producing a state of watchful harmony...Being vigilant also requires that each of us feels natural and at ease with ourselves...not letting our thoughts run around like tigers causing internal havoc and distress." "Bringing out the best in yourself is a lifelong, intentional process that involves aligning your daily actions with your core values, cultivating self-awareness and embracing growth. It requires moving from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset, where challenges are viewed as opportunities rather than obstacles." When we are kind to ourselves, take care of our minds and bodies, do what we love and are good at, practise gratitude, know when to say no, refrain from comparing ourselves with others, surround ourselves with people who encourage us, set realistic goals, ask for help and learn how to triumph over our fears, then we allow our true potential to emerge. When we know how to bring out the best in ourselves, we are inspired to bring out the best in others. When our lives have meaning, our innate desire to help others emerges. "Altruism is part of what it means to be human." It's contagious. Research has revealed that we're at our happiest when we are helping others. "Making a difference in your community can increase your lifespan...And overall, giving back can help you find purpose and a sense of belonging." Every act of service counts and has the potential to bring about lasting change. What could you start doing differently to create a difference in your life, in the lives of others and in the world? |
