Exploring The Road Less TravelledBy Karen Vally on 20 May 2026
How would you describe the world in which we currently live? My coach once described it as, "volatile, uncertain, chaotic and ambiguous." That was about 10 years ago.Not much has changed. One of the most common ways in which most people cope with the demands of daily life, is to conform. "We live in a world that promotes 'fitting in.' And to a certain extent, fitting in is useful...But fitting in doesn't always serve us."It's not always the most fulfilling way in which to live. What if we were to be brave, bold and courageous enough to choose, "the road less travelled"? "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I - I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference." However, it takes courage to be different in a world that rewards conformity. When we're different, others often interrogate or criticize us. In moments like these, our resolve and resilience are tested. Standing firm is most effective. "The good news is that every time you make a choice to live authentically, according to your values and on your terms, the more confident you become." Being different not only makes you more confident but it also makes you kinder. If you're different, people are sometimes nasty to you, or they simply exclude you because you're different. As a result, we're often more gentle towards others. "Not only has being different made me a kinder person, but it has led me to view kindness as the most important human quality...the most important thing I want to know when I meet someone is this: Are you kind? "Fitting in and 'being beige' will not prevent you from doing well in life. You'll be able to fit in, make a reasonable salary and stroll easily along. But you won't live an exceptional life. " In the view of the writer, Meerabelle Dey (whose daughter coined the phrase, 'being beige') people who live exceptional lives are those who are different - people such as Oprah, Bill Gates and Jane Goodall. What makes people different, she observes, is that they are interesting and that is often what makes them successful. At a particular point in their lives, "they figured out that what made them different was what was going to make them successful." So, she says, "Don't fear what makes you different. Embrace it and use it to your advantage. ..Know that what makes you different is also what can make you more confident, kinder and more successful." |
