Challenges

By Karen Vally on 15 Jan 2019

Unexpected challenges can easily overwhelm us. What if we were to find effective ways in which to deal with them rather than being thrown off course?

The key lies in building habits that make us feel positive and resilient. Firstly, we need to get out of our own way. So often, we're our own worst enemy by entertaining negative thoughts such as, " I'll never be able to achieve that." Friends and family can cast doubts in our minds by saying, " There's  no way that you  can do that."  Prepare thoroughly, adopt a holistic approach and then take that first step anyway.

Failure, disappointment and setbacks are often caused by a diminished sense of self worth, a lack of commitment or a lack of motivation. So, what are the best ways in which to cultivate a thriving sense of self-belief? Change the way you think by converting negative thoughts into positive ones. Disprove your negative thoughts. Acknowledge your unique gifts, talents and strengths. We all have at least one. Write these down. Then write down all your successes. Yes, that's right, as many successes as you can recall. Build on this foundation. If you have never thought of rewarding yourself, do so today  and continue this habit. You will be amazed at how good it feels.

Once we see that we can achieve the small steps which lead to our goals, we have laid the necessary foundation for overcoming any challenge. The key is to step back, take emotion out of the situation and to start asking questions. What can be done right now? What resources are needed? Who can assist me? How can this challenge be broken down into smaller steps? Instead of blaming ourselves, we could remind ourselves that our challenges do not define us.

" Most of our obstacles would melt away if, instead of cowering before them, we made up our minds to walk boldly through them." Orison Swett Marden.

" Obstacles are figments of your thinking. That's why as soon as your old thinking departs, new thinking arrives and obstacles fade away." Garret Kramer.

The ability to keep going, even when things are not going well, enables us to thrive. Each time we overcome a challenge, we build strength, resilience and our mental capacity. It is the most important "muscle" to develop, as it boosts our confidence every time we are faced with a new challenge. Struggle builds character.

What could we do in the spaces between our challenges, to enhance our well-being? Appreciate life. Exercise. Incorporate a few stress relievers into our day. Spend time in Nature. Celebrate our "summits." Seek new ones. Find a role model. Hold our heads up high. Use words that convey confidence. Ask new questions such as "How can I make this work?" Set ourselves tasks and follow through. Create a Life - Work balance. Use a journal. And sit in silence for 10 minutes each day away from any distractions.

" Too few challenges can be as dangerous as too many. You should aim to always feel challenged but never overwhelmed." Jeff Archer.

Fear is a  choice. Successful people are acutely aware of this fact, that's why they flip fear on its head. Will you have the courage to do so the next time you are faced with a challenge?
