The Sweet Spot

Most of us try to control ourselves, others and the world around us. We respond in this way because we're afraid of what will happen if we don't. This attempt to control everything and everyone comes at a hefty price. We're trying to control the uncontrollable. What if we were to grow weary of this continuous cycle of tension and anxiety? Surely there must be some other way? 

Echart Tolle says that we should begin by accepting and surrendering to the present moment, not because we no longer care, but because it releases tension and replaces it with peace of mind. From there, we will be able to make the most appropriate decisions.

The next time you're faced with an unexpected set of circumstances, pause, be open and pay attention. Breathe deeply and relax. When you feel calm, explore your options and then respond.

Surrendering does not mean failure or defeat. It is not a strategy but a realisation that all we know, is that we don 't know. It is a complete acceptance of what is, and includes having faith that things will work out, even without our influence. Surrender brings relief. It creates peace of mind.

" In true surrender, we don't know if what's to come will be better or worse...All we know is that we can't do it this way a moment longer...Surrender is a willingness to stop fighting or trying to change what is, right now. We give ourselves an opportunity to drop into the present moment. "

Acceptance does not mean supporting, choosing, wanting or liking "the shifting landscape." It means that we are allowing something to exist. We create space for it and then we can decide what to do next. It is the beginning of a process of action.

" Acceptance is like protecting yourself with your own shield. We need to learn how to identify when it's time to persist and when it's time to accept." Learning how to practise acceptance effectively is a lifelong commitment which has the potential to greatly enhance our well-being.
