Making Progress by Becoming the Best Version of Ourselves

By Karen Vally on 20 Oct 2021

I am fascinated by human behaviour and what lies behind certain patterns of behaviour. One of our greatest gifts as human beings, is the limitless potential with which we are all born. Our mission is to discover how to bring out the best in ourselves.

How would you describe "the best version of yourself"?
What needs to happen for you to reach "the best version of yourself"?

Becoming the best version of ourselves, doesn't just happen overnight, nor is it a smooth or easy process. It requires courage, confidence, hard work and resilience. It is imperative to begin, first by defining what we want, and then working out how we are going to acquire it.

What are the kinds of things to which we should pay attention, if we want to improve ourselves, and the way we feel about our quality of life? The experts agree unanimously, that our first step should be, to take good care of our bodies. This can be achieved through regular exercise, a healthy eating plan, good quality sleep, drinking water and regularly doing what we enjoy. The next step, is to take good care of our minds. This can be achieved through deep breathing, prayer, meditation and practising gratitude.

It is helpful to take good care of our emotions by paying close attention to them, listening to our inner voice and spending more time in our heart space, exploring and discovering what we really what. We could use our imaginations more often, to visualize what it is that we most deeply desire.

One of the greatest sources of strength, is our relationships with our family and friends. We are encouraged to take good care of them. We flourish when we focus on building lasting relationships.

A deep and meaningful spiritual life plays a pivotal role in helping us become the best version of ourselves. When we replace an "autopilot" mode of existence with a sharp awareness, and when we act decisively, we open up the possiblity of becoming the best version of ourselves.

"You don't just happen to stumble upon the best version of yourself. You need to start from the beginning and take a high number of small steps in order to become what you envision."

Make sure this version is your own and use your ideas to acquire new skills. Deepen your knowledge and understanding of yourself, others, your career and your surroundings. Avoid procrastination, panic and overwhelm. Those who procrasinate, prevent themselves from becoming the best version of themselves. Focus on the benfits of doing tasks today, rather than at some unknown time in the future.  Accept help from others and track your progress in a journal. Reward yourself regularly and pause frequently to notice how far you've come. Help others to become the best version of themselves.

"Helping others is one of the best paths to becoming a better person. When you support someone in need, you realize that you  can be of value to other people and that you have a role to play in adding to the store of good in the world."

Tony Robbins has some nuggests of wisdom for those of us who have a deep desire to become the very best that we can be. He begins by encouraging us to discard limiting beliefs. He emphasizes the benefits of developing a growth mindset, cultivating a positive attitude and growing our strengths. Once we have set a reasonable goal and modified our expectations, he suggests creating a few daily rituals and repeating them. He advocates replacing fear and doubt with self-belief and having an open heart and an open mind to welcome this imminent new version of ourselves. He describes the benefit of prioritizing the outcome we desire and how important it is to be kind to ourselves along the way.

Once we realize that there is nothing stopping us from beginning the process of changing the way we feel and the way we live our lives, we open the door and clear the way for redesigning our lives. Sometimes it's just a little tweak. Sometimes we need to take a leap of faith and try something completely different. Take responsibility. Make wise decisions. Be brave. Take calculated risks. We learn and grow through success, failure and disappointment. We benefit from letting go of the past, forgiving ourselves and loving ourselves unconditionally.

It is extremely helpful to keep our eyes on "the big picture." Refrain from being derailed by a tendency to "sweat the small stuff."  Cut out the "noise" and eliminate distractions. Take time to rest. Rest is equally as important as hard work. Create a Life-Work balance. Find joy in small things such as a flower or the shape of the clouds in the sky.

If we wait patiently for the best version of ourselves to arrive, we will remain stuck with our current version. If we're feeling dissatisfied with the current version of ourselves, the quickest way to overcome that challenge, is to begin right away working towards a better version.

"Most of us have two lives. The life we live and the unlived life within us."
