The Risks Attached to Living on Autopilot and How to Convert our Stumbling Blocks into Stepping Stones

By Karen Vally on 13 Oct 2024

How would you know that you're living on autopilot? According to Gustavo Razzetti, these are the clues : your daily routine is predictable; you strive to please others rather than pay attention to your own needs; you are constantly busy, distracted or both; you feel as if time is flying, you struggle to remember what you've done, frequently feel guilty about not achieving enough and you often feel as if you're missing out.

Razzetti describes our brains as having two systems, one for quick decisions and the other for dealing with more complex issues such as building a new habit or learning a new skill. This system is more reliable.

"It's not that one mode is better than the other. The secret lies in using both in a balanced way...There's nothing wrong with using your autopilot. The problem is when it becomes your driving system of choice...If your autopilot is always on, you are just existing not living...behaving with intentionality is vital when you must think through a situation, problem or dilemma."

"Don't let your routines dictate how you live. Bring more mindfulness to everyday chores."

"When you press the brakes, the auopilot turns off. A pause is more than slowing down. It's creating space to start paying attention. You can reflect on your life. We are prisoners of our busy minds; pausing sets you free."

"When we live on autopilot, we stop challenging ourselves. We end up bored...Discomfort is a doorway to personal discovery and growth. Learning happens when you stretch beyond your comfort zone. Test your limits. Try new things. Develop the practice of bringing new experiences to your life."

When we make our personal development a priority, our self-awareness intensifies, we grow more confident, we are more likely to develop our strengths and the courage to leave our comfort zone. When we're faced with an unexpected challenge, it is helpful to shift our focus and to start asking probing questions.

"What is yet to happen, we can shape and influence...Every moment we're alive, we can make new choices that help us move on and step toward a better future."

"Successful people assume responsibility for finding the support they need to solve the problem."

When we're faced with a stumbling block, we should explore all our options, maintain a steadfast faith, focus on our purpose, have fun regularly and never ever give up hope.

"A bend in the road is not the end of the road unless we fail to make the turn."
