The SecretBy Karen Vally on 25 Aug 2015It is comforting to know that our brains can be rewired in such a way that we can experience a more satisfying existence. The key to creating positive feelings lies in taking action, and making the effort to consistently repeat certain behaviours. Character traits such as curiosity, having a clear goal, perseverence and the ability to ignore distractions, are useful. There are two fundamental ways in which we can influence our feelings: i) by changing our external circumstances or ii) by changing the way in which we respond to life. "The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times...(they) usually occur when a person's body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile." Happiness, says Professor Csikszentmihalyi, in his book, "Flow: The Secret to Happiness," does not just occur. It must be prepared for and cultivated. We are in "flow" when we are completely absorbed in an activity that is sufficiently challenging for us. It happens when we confidently and courageously choose a clear and manageable task, focus on it, discard worry and become completely oblivious of time. The activity itself produces such intense feelings of joy, that motivation comes naturally. An artist applying colour to a blank canvas, a musician composing a song or a sports person delivering a peak performance might experience being "in flow." However, being in "flow" can just as easily take place in everyday activities such completing a project, reading or having an engaging conversation. To live wisely, we need to sharpen our awareness of our happiness, record our happy moments, consistently practise good habits, get to know what we enjoy and what really helps us and create a balance by devoting time and energy to our well-being. What if we were to teach our brains a new trick? |
