It takes courage to take that first step towards change. It takes even more discipline and commitment to consistently keep that momentum going. It involves doing things differently and we experience a considerable amount of pain and discomfort before we reach our “destination.” So why would anyone want to change or learn something new? Why not stay exactly as we are, where we are and how we are? Why would anyone want to exchange a place that’s comfortable for one that’s uncomfortable?
Most human beings possess an innate desire to learn and develop. When we learn, we change something: a perception, a belief, a value, our understanding or we learn a new skill. To achieve any of these, a shift usually occurs. “Entire careers, entire life paths are carved out by people dipping their baby toes into small ponds and suddenly discovering a love for something they had no idea would capture their imaginations.”
The greatest benefit that comes from learning something new, is that our minds are opened and we get to know and understand ourselves, and others a little better. Such insights are invaluable as we journey through life. We grow in confidence, we have a sense of accomplishment, our knowledge expands and our skills are enhanced. New ideas and opportunities emerge as a result of our heightened levels of excitement and motivation. We experience a new sense of hope, an anticipation of what is yet to come. Suddenly, we become aware of our potential and realise that it’s been there all along. We begin to really appreciate and value ourselves.
Those who actively seek ways in which to acknowledge and grow their sense of self-worth, are much more likely to accomplish their goals because they find it easier to embrace change, take a reasonable risk or learn something new.
“How wonderful it is to open a flood of courage and be carried on its waves to destinations of unexpected benefit.”
